Picture 1 of 12

Photograph of poor and white children playing among poor tenement houses and abandoned factories in a slum in the tired New England industrial town of St. Albans, Vermont. The trash and facades of the buildings are deteriorated and suggest the poverty of the people living here, who are mostly Caucasian. The city had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken August 27, 1973.
